Uzbekistan residents to receive emergency alerts via mosque loudspeakers
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in cooperation with the Ministry of Emergency Situations, has introduced an innovative technical solution aimed at expandingthe coverage of early warning systems for the population during emergencies.
Under the initiative, special device is being installed in mosques located near populated areas. This will enable the transmission of emergency messages from the Ministry of Emergency Situations via the mosques' external loudspeakers and ensure the prompt dissemination of information to a wide audience. To date, the device has been installed in 272 mosques across Jizzakh, Kashkadarya, Namangan, Samarkand, Syrdarya, Tashkent, and Fergana regions.
The selection of mosques is not incidental, as they are traditionally regarded as influential social institutions with strong authority among local communities. In addition, mosques are located in nearly all settlements and are equipped with high - powered external loudspeakers capable of covering a radius of 500 to 2,000 meters.
According to project estimates, the system can reach around 6.5 million people, including women, men, children, and vulnerable groups. An additional advantage of this channel is the ability to transmit emergency messages even when mobile communications and power supply are disrupted.
In the context of climate change and the increasing risk of natural disasters, early warning systems play a crucial role in saving lives and reducing economic losses. With the support of UNDP and financial assistance from the Green Climate Fund, 28 large outdoor digital screens have also been installed along major highways and in crowded areas to further strengthen public alert systems.
The joint project, titled “Enhancing Multi - Hazard Early Warning System to increase resilience of Uzbekistan communities to climate change - induced hazards” is implemented by UNDP, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, and the Uzhydromet service, and is funded by the Green Climate Fund. The project focuses on modernizing and restructuring the country’s early warning system, with particular emphasis on natural hazards such as floods, mudflows, landslides, avalanches, and hydrological droughts in densely populated and economically significant mountainous regions of Uzbekistan.
